A mug for Grandmother's and Grandfather's Day

21 and 22 January - dates that are easy to forget, which is a shame. Grandmother’s and Grandfather’s Day is a good moment to show your grandparents you’re thinking of them. And a hand-painted mug with a portrait is a gift that hits the mark: it’s personal, practical, and one you don’t stash in a cupboard. After years of making portraits for families, I know it’s one of the most rewarding occasions - because grandparents are moved, and grandchildren get something more than an ordinary trinket.

21 and 22 January - why it’s worth planning early

Grandparents most value presence, conversation, time spent together. We know that. But a personalized object plays a different role - it’s a symbolic reminder of loved ones when they’re not there beside you. A daily coffee from a mug with your portrait? It’s a fond memory that returns every day.

This type of gift is worth planning two to three weeks ahead. A hand-painted mug isn’t made in 48 hours - it’s a process that includes a conversation with you, a digital design, approval, painting, firing, quality control and shipping. Grandparents are also a generation that generally already has everything they need. Another towel, another bathrobe, another box of chocolates - after years of such gifts, things start to pile up and lose meaning. A hand-painted mug with a portrait of a specific grandchild or a specific family is different - it doesn’t fall into the “things to put away” category, because it’s not a product off the shelf.

A mug for grandmother - character and personal details

Every grandmother is different and each deserves something of her own. A mug can be supplemented with text - a name, a short dedication, a date - or with distinctive details that define your grandmother. The dog she adores, a favourite flower, something the whole family associates with her.

The most common ideas that come to me from clients: a portrait of grandmother in her characteristic sweater, with a cup of tea beside her, with a flower in her hair. Or a group of grandchildren in one frame. Or grandmother with her favourite cat on her lap. All of this can be done. The more personal details you add in the brief, the more on-target the result.

By default I paint on white mugs, but if grandmother likes colour - there are other options too. The material and colour of the vessel can be matched to her style. An enamel mug for a grandmother who loves vintage. A glass mug, if grandmother is delighted by herbal teas. A ceramic mug - the classic, which fits most kitchens.

A mug with a dedication is also a good idea. A short line - “The best grandma”, “For grandma from Zosia”, “Grandma Krysia 2026” - added by hand with a brush in my own line. It’s a detail that makes the mug more “yours” than mine. It’s a memory with a name.

A mug for grandfather - a separate or shared variant

Grandfather can be on a separate mug or together with grandmother - on one. The version with two portraits works great for couples who are always together. It’s also a mug that carries the symbolism of the bond - it can accompany grandfather even in moments when grandmother isn’t there.

What’s worth knowing about male portraits in my line: I treat them with exactly the same care as portraits of women. A characteristic moustache, beard, glasses, hair - all of this builds recognisability and needs attention. If your grandfather wears a particular cap, hat, checked shirt - all of that can be added.

Some clients choose a “themed” variant - grandfather with a fishing rod, if he’s keen on fishing; grandfather with a motorbike, if he likes two-wheelers; grandfather at chess, if that’s his sport. It takes a bit more room on the mug, but it gives the portrait a narrative context that’s very readable for the family.

How to prepare the photos - practical tips

A practical piece of advice: if you’re ordering a mug with a portrait of grandmother or grandfather, send me several photos, not one. The more reference material, the better the end result. Ideally:

• A photo in good light, preferably daylight
• From different angles - ideally something frontal and something three-quarter
• Showing distinctive features - the hairstyle, the eyes, fine facial traits
• The most recent ones, but if you have photos where grandmother/grandfather looks “most like themselves” - add those

Some families only have old photos, sometimes heavily faded. That’s no problem - I can work from those too, although the result may differ slightly from the person’s current appearance. In such a case we usually decide whether we’re going for a portrait of their younger self (a sentimental, retro feel) or trying to recreate the current version of grandmother/grandfather from what I have.

The family variant - a mug with a portrait of the grandchildren

An interesting variant that my clients increasingly order is a mug with a portrait of the grandchildren - as a gift from children to their own parents, that is, the grandparents of the little ones. Grandmother gets a mug with a portrait of two, three, sometimes four grandchildren. Each in a different pose, with small attributes - it works phenomenally.

You can also do a “family mug” - everyone in the household on one mug, in one composition. This requires a more detailed brief and a correspondingly larger composition, but the effect is genuinely moving. Grandmother looks every morning at the whole family she loves.

Why it’s worth ordering in advance

The earlier you write, the more time we have to refine the details. The average turnaround is two to three weeks, but if I have a queue of orders at the time, it may take longer. January is my season for Grandmother’s and Grandfather’s Day, so messages start coming in as early as December.

Remember the shipping time too. If the mug is to reach a grandmother living in another part of Poland, add a few days for transport. It’s best to plan things so the parcel arrives a few days before the specific date - just in case.

What to add besides the mug - the complete gift

The mug can be the centrepiece of the gift, but it often works better as part of a larger whole. Small ideas that pair nicely with a hand-painted mug:

• Grandmother’s favourite coffee or tea - if you know what she uses, add a fresh, good packet. A mug filled with coffee works like a ready-made starter kit for the morning ritual.
• A homemade jar of jam, honey or a wonderful cake - something made by hand paired with a portrait mug is a very personal combination.
• A family photo in a wooden frame - a classic, but it still works. Grandmother gets a mug for everyday drinking and a frame to set on the dresser.
• A book grandmother hasn’t read yet - a novel, poetry, an album. Something suited to her tastes that she can spend time with after a coffee from our mug.
• A card with a handwritten dedication - simple but essential. A text from you, in your own hand, added to the gift, raises its emotional value.

It works most beautifully when the gift is made of two or three elements that together tell a story. The mug is then not “a lone object with a portrait” but a fragment of a broader, thoughtful gift composition.

What to do when you live far from grandmother

Many grandchildren write to me asking to ship the mug straight to grandmother or grandfather - because they themselves live in another city, another country, or for other reasons can’t hand the gift over in person. That’s completely OK.

By default I ship the mug to the address you provide. I can include your own card or a brief note from me saying the parcel comes from a specific person. The packaging is discreet - no logos, no extra ads, no controversial elements. It’s simply a neatly wrapped gift that arrives in perfect condition.

If you plan to hand it over in person but worry the parcel won’t arrive on time - consider shipping it to yourself in advance. Better to have the mug at home a week early than to wait for the courier on the day of giving.

What grandparents say after receiving the mug

Over the years I regularly get feedback from my clients - stories of how grandmother or grandfather reacted to the gift. These stories repeat in an interesting way.

The most common reaction: grandmother cries. Grandfather doesn’t let go of the mug for a long time. They look at the portrait, peer at it from every side, ask who painted it, how long it took, how much it cost. Then the mug takes pride of place in the kitchen and becomes the one grandmother/grandfather always reaches for.

The second common reaction: grandparents start telling stories. They look at the portrait and drift into memories - “Ah, that sweater of yours you painted in, do you still have it?”. The mug becomes a starting point for a conversation that reaches deep into the family relationship.

The third - momentary bewilderment, because the mug is odd, unusual, “not like other gifts”. But that bewilderment quickly turns to delight when grandfather realises the portrait is genuinely his, that someone sat down and painted it especially for him.

That’s why it’s worth giving grandparents a moment - don’t rush to explain, just let them discover the mug their own way. The first emotions are often what stays with them most.
