Kraków is probably the most recognisable Polish wedding setting. Couples who choose this city do so for a specific reason - they want their celebration to have the historical depth that Wawel, the Main Square, the Cloth Hall and the Planty provide. And it’s in exactly such a setting that wedding live painting sounds especially good. Art created live, in a city that is itself an artistic backdrop.

I work as an illustrator and portrait artist. I paint portraits during weddings - in the hall, in front of the guests, in real time. Each painting is separate, hand-made, one of a kind. I work in Kraków regularly, because this city attracts couples looking for something more than a standard wedding package. What live painting at a wedding in Kraków is

Live painting means painting portraits during the wedding. My station is in a discreet but visible spot in the wedding hall. Easel, palette, paints - everything set up in advance, so I can start working from the very beginning of the reception without disrupting the schedule.

Each portrait is created from a short photo session. I take a reference photo of the guests or the newlyweds, and then I paint - in 6 to 12 minutes per image, depending on the level of detail. I create individual portraits, couples, sometimes groups of 3-4 people.

What the collaboration during live painting in Kraków looks like

We start the process with contact - by email or through the form. I ask about the basics: the wedding date, the venue, the number of guests, how many hours I work, whether you’re interested in a portrait of the couple, the guests, or everything together. On that basis I prepare an offer.

Stage 1 - planning. After the initial arrangements we have a detailed conversation. We discuss the style of the portraits (classic, relaxed, expressive), the number of working hours, the wedding schedule. We also decide where in the hall I’ll set up the station - it’s about visibility on one hand and not disrupting movement on the other.

Stage 2 - work at the wedding. On the day of the celebration I arrive early. I set up the easel, paints, materials. When the guests start arriving, I’m ready. I paint throughout the whole event - with short breaks between portraits. The first one always belongs to the newlyweds.

Stage 3 - finalisation. At the end of the evening the paintings are either handed directly to the guests or collected as a collection for the newlyweds. If needed, I provide basic packing for transport. The couple decides how they want to organise it.

Most wedding attractions work on the principle of a short, intense effect - a show, a performance, an act. The whole thing lasts a few, maybe a dozen minutes, and then a memory and a recording remain.

Live painting works differently. It’s a process lasting through most of the wedding, running alongside the celebration, but discreet enough that it doesn’t force attention. Guests come over when they want, watch when they feel like it. Those who have been portrayed take the painting with them. It’s a keepsake you can hang at home and that comes back to them in everyday life.

A wedding in Kraków and the logistics of work

Kraków is a compact city - wedding venues in the centre are accessible to me without any problem. If the wedding takes place outside the city - around Wieliczka, Niepołomice, Krzeszowice, Skawina or Kraków-Mogiła - I can manage the drive too.

I need a station of about 2-3 square metres, access to a socket and light. In most Kraków wedding halls this is no problem - most venues already have experience with artistic guests, photographers, decorators, so the logistics are smooth.

I work for 5-7 hours of active work, which realistically gives 30-45 portraits. The number depends on the level of detail and the pace of the evening. If you want to be sure all your guests will be portrayed, it’s worth estimating the number in advance and possibly extending my presence in the hall by extra hours.

When it’s best to book a date

As a wedding destination, Kraków works all year round, but the peak is of course May-September. In season, weekend dates fill up fast - it’s worth asking about availability 8-12 months in advance. Off-season, booking is often possible with much shorter notice.
