I’ve been painting portraits live for several years and I can see how much today’s approach to organising a wedding is changing. The couple no longer wants just good music and a tasty menu. They want guests to leave with something in hand, with a story, with an impression. What live painting at a wedding in Katowice is

Live painting means painting guest portraits in real time, during the reception. I arrive early, set up the station in a visible but non-disruptive spot in the hall, lay out the paints, easels, materials. When the guests start arriving, I’m already ready.

Each portrait is created from a short photo session. I take a reference photo of a person or group, and then I paint - over the next few or a dozen minutes. During that time the guests go back to the celebration, eating, dancing. When the painting is ready, they come to see the result. Sometimes it stays with them, sometimes the newlyweds collect the whole thing as a collection of keepsakes from the day.

In Katowice I often work in spaces with an industrial character - raw brick, concrete, metal elements. These places harmonise great with the painting process, because the palette and easel become an extra visual accent in the hall.

How the collaboration during live painting in Katowice works

The whole process is divided into four stages:

1. The first conversation. We meet online or in writing. I ask about the date, the wedding venue, the number of guests, the style of the celebration. We decide whether you want a portrait of the newlyweds only, or whether we also paint guests, in what style, how many hours I work in the hall. Based on this conversation I prepare an offer tailored to your plan.

2. Preparation before the wedding. In the week before the celebration we settle the logistical details - the arrival time, the location of the station in the hall, contact with the coordinator or master of ceremonies. If the wedding is near Katowice, in Mikołów, Tychy, Bytom or Chorzów, travel is no problem.

3. Work at the wedding. I arrive early, most often an hour before the first dance or right after an outdoor ceremony. I set up the easel, lay out the paints, check the light. Then I start painting - about 8 portraits an hour, depending on the level of detail. Realistically, during 5-6 hours of work 30-40 works are created.

4. Handing over the paintings. The portraits can reach the guests as they go or all at once at the end of the evening. The newlyweds always get their portrait, regardless of how the rest of the evening turns out. If you choose the option of handing the whole collection to you, I also take care of simple packing for transport.

Today the market has plenty of options - photo booths, magicians, neon signs, soap bubbles in the hall. Each of these attractions has its value, but it differs from live painting in one key thing: the quality of the keepsake.

A photo booth leaves photos on photographic paper that, after a year or two, end up in a box. A magician gives a dozen minutes of emotion that live only in memory. A neon sign stays with you, but there’s one, not for the guests.

A hand-painted portrait carries a different weight. It’s not a mass product, it’s not a copy. It’s a painting that someone devoted time to, that has the texture of paint on canvas, the artist’s signature. You don’t throw away an object like that. I often see later in photos from couples or guests that the portrait hangs on a wall in the living room or bedroom - and it still makes an impression.

What affects the number of portraits created in the hall

During a standard 5-6 hours of work, 30-40 paintings are realistically created. The number depends on:

• The level of detail of the portrait. A simpler composition - more portraits. A more elaborate background, more people in the frame - fewer, but more impressive works.
• The number of guests and their interest. Sometimes more people sign up than I’m able to handle. Then we arrange a sign-up system or a draw with the newlyweds.
• The pace of the wedding. If the hall is full of movement, people come over in waves - it’s easier to focus. If there’s more dispersion, the time between portraits gets longer.

The newlyweds always get their portrait. It’s the first item on the list and I don’t skip it regardless of circumstances.

A wedding in Katowice and the logistics

Katowice has the advantage of being well connected. Wedding venues in the centre are reachable from Mikołów, Tychy, Chorzów, Sosnowiec or Bytom in 15-30 minutes. If the wedding takes place nearby - in Pszczyna, Lędziny, Gliwice - I can also manage to get there without problem and be on site well in advance.

The station I set up takes about 2-3 square metres. I need access to a socket (a lamp, possibly a hair dryer for the paint), a stable floor and light - preferably natural, but if needed I also work under artificial lighting. Most Katowice wedding halls meet these conditions without problem.

When to book a date

In Katowice and the area, the busiest dates are the weekends of May-September. If you’re planning a wedding in season, it’s worth asking about availability at least 6-8 months in advance. Off-season - from November to April - a date can often be arranged with two months’ notice.
