Wedding live painting is an attraction that combines an artistic element with a lasting keepsake for those present. Guests return home with a hand-painted portrait that stays with them for years.

I work as an illustrator creating portraits live, and I can see how this form of entertainment is gaining popularity. Couples are looking for something more than classic photo booths or illusion shows - something that sets their day apart and gives guests a lasting keepsake. What live painting at a wedding is

Live painting is creating guest portraits directly during the wedding. I arrive with equipment - a graphics tablet, an easel, a printer for keepsakes - and set up the station in a strategic spot in the hall. In a way that’s visible, but at the same time doesn’t disrupt the course of the event.

Guests who want a portrait come over to me for a moment. I take a reference photo of them, then they go back to dancing and eating. I start painting - based on the photo, calmly, without requiring posing. The portrait is created in 8-12 minutes, depending on the number of people in it and the level of detail.

When finished, I print the work in A4 or A5 format and hand it to the guest in an elegant mount. The keepsake is ready to take away; all that’s left is to put it in a frame and hang it at home.

Originality compared to classic attractions

Classic photo booths, illusion shows, caricaturists - all of this has been seen before at many weddings. For most guests, live painting is a new experience. The process from the technical side

A consultation before the wedding

We meet online or in person a few weeks before the wedding. We talk about the style of the wedding, the colours of the decorations, the character of the couple. I get guidance on whether there are elements to include in the portraits - a logo from the invitation, accent colours, a theme. This affects how I match the portraits to the overall visual style of the wedding.

The wedding day - setting up the station

I usually arrive an hour before the planned start of the celebration. I set up the table, plug in the equipment, check the lighting. The station takes about 80x60 cm - it fits in almost any hall, even an intimate one. I require one socket and good lighting (not strobe).

Work during the wedding

I paint for 5-6 hours with short breaks. During that time 30-40 portraits are created - the number depends on the level of detail of each. The newlyweds always get a portrait first, the rest of the guests in the sign-up queue.

I communicate with the DJ or master of ceremonies so they pass on the information to guests about how the attraction works, when to come over, whether I can make double portraits (of couples). Without this communication, guests don’t always know they’re invited.

Handing over the keepsake

I print the finished portrait on site and hand it to the guest in an elegant mount. For the newlyweds I usually prepare a larger version, on better paper, with a description - the wedding date, the names, the place. It’s a gift from me to the main pair.

Who most often chooses live painting

In my practice, the couples who decide on live painting usually share a common trait - they want their wedding to be different, packed with detail. A classic 150-person wedding with a DJ and alcohol - yes. But with an extra attraction that leaves a mark.

These are often couples for whom aesthetics matter. They choose beautiful locations, matching decorations, a good photographer. Live painting fits into this logic - we add to the day an element that builds the atmosphere of “this day is special, because everything was taken care of”.

What affects the price

The price of live painting at a wedding is individual - it depends on a few factors:

• the number of working hours during the wedding
• the number of portraits to make (mainly for the newlyweds and closest family)
• the style of the portraits - simpler, fairytale sketches vs more refined works
• travel to the location
• whether additional materials are needed (special mounts, frames, larger formats)

I treat every enquiry individually. The earlier you write, the easier it is to plan the details and fit into the schedule.

When it’s worth booking

The wedding season in Poland is May-September, peaking in June, July and August. The best dates go a year to two years ahead, especially spring and summer Saturdays. The earlier you let me know, the greater the chance that your date will be free.

If the wedding falls in the lower season - October, November, March, April - there are more dates and you can plan more flexibly. Some couples who choose unusual dates get more leeway from me in choosing the package and the working time.

Looking at it from the guest’s perspective - it’s not just a painting. It’s a few minutes of personal attention during the wedding, the experience of watching someone paint specifically for them, and a physical keepsake they take home. Some guests come back years later with a message: “your painting still hangs at my place today”.

This builds memories differently from classic attractions. Every guest who got a portrait has their own private story from your wedding - “when the painter portrayed me, she told me about the style she works in”. It’s a detail, but a day people remember is made up of details like these.
