Live painting at a christening - an artistic way to capture an important day

A christening is a day that parents want to remember especially. Less crowded than a wedding, more intimate, with a circle of the closest people - it’s an occasion where every guest matters. Live painting at a christening lets you capture that atmosphere in the form of hand-painted portraits that stay with the family for years.

I work as an illustrator creating portraits live, and I increasingly get enquiries specifically about christenings. It’s a natural extension of wedding live painting - a different kind of celebration, the same value of the keepsake. In this text I’ll show you what such a day looks like from the side of the parents and guests.

How christenings differ from weddings from my perspective

A smaller scale, a more intimate atmosphere

A classic christening in Poland is 20-50 people - parents, grandparents, godparents, the closest family, sometimes friends. It’s a completely different microcosm than a 150-person wedding. In practice it means I’m able to make a portrait of practically every person who wants one.

A smaller group also allows for more refined works. I can devote more time to a single portrait, add more detail, ask about preferences. It’s a day where the quality of each work matters more than the number.

Symbolism to weave into the portraits

At the parents’ request I can weave symbolic elements referring to the celebration into the portraits - a subtle motif of a baptismal font, a pastel palette, a floral motif, sometimes a religious detail. It all depends on the style in which you imagine the keepsakes.

Some parents want a portrait only of the child being christened, others prefer a family composition - parents, grandparents, child together. The third variant is portraits of everyone present individually. We always arrange this in advance, during the consultation before the celebration.

Why it’s worth considering this attraction

A unique keepsake for the child

A christened child doesn’t remember that day - they’re too young. But in 10, 20 years they’ll get the christening portrait in hand and see what they and their parents looked like at that moment. It’s a different kind of memory than photos - more personal, more artistic.

An element of prestige and class

The presence of an artist at a christening adds a special character to the celebration. It’s not a standard element of the event - it’s something that catches the eye. Guests ask about it, tell their friends later, sometimes ask about this service for their own celebrations.

Interaction with guests

Live painting draws attention. Grandparents come over, watch, comment. Guests who don’t know each other find a common topic - art created before their eyes is a natural meeting point. It builds an atmosphere of “we’re all experiencing this day together”.

No disruption to the course of the celebration

Guests don’t have to pose, don’t have to interrupt conversations or the celebration. I take a reference photo of them in a second, then they go back to their day. The whole painting process happens in the background - visible, but not invasive.

Adapting to the atmosphere

Every celebration has its own character. A christening in a very traditional style requires different accents than a looser, more contemporary one. Pastel colours, religious motifs, subtle compositions - we can adapt all of this.

A personalised approach

Each portrait can have an individual dedication - the person’s name, the date of the christening, the place. It’s a detail that turns a portrait from “a nice image” into “a keepsake from a specific day in my life”.

The process of the christening day

A consultation in advance

We meet 4-6 weeks before the celebration. We talk about the style of the christening, the number of guests, the expectations for the portraits. We decide whether I paint all the guests or selected people (parents with the child, grandparents, godparents). It’s a key moment, because the plan for the day depends on the number of portraits to make.

Setting up the station

I arrive an hour before the planned start of the part at the table. I set up an 80x60 cm table, an easel showing the work in progress, a printer. I set up the station in a visible but not central spot - so that guests who want to come over have access, but at the same time the work doesn’t compete with the main points of the celebration.

Work during the christening

As standard I work 3-4 hours. During that time 15-25 portraits are created - fewer than at a wedding, because with a smaller number of guests I have more time for each. The parents with the child always get a portrait, the rest of the guests in the sign-up queue. Grandparents and godparents usually also get one as a priority.

Handing over the keepsakes

I print the finished portraits on site and hand them to the guests in an elegant mount. For the parents I often prepare a larger version, on better paper, with a description - the date of the christening, the child’s name, the place of the celebration. It’s a gift for the main family.

What affects the price

The price of live painting at a christening is individual. It depends on:

• the number of working hours during the celebration
• the number of portraits to make
• the style of the portraits - simpler sketches vs more refined works
• any additional elements (larger formats, special frames, calligraphic dedications)
• travel to the venue

When it’s worth booking

Christenings have a less rigid season than weddings - they take place all year round. Nonetheless, if you’re planning a celebration on a Saturday on a popular date (spring, autumn), I recommend booking 2-3 months ahead. In less busy months (summer holidays, early winter) there are more dates.

Typical scenarios I carry out

In my practice I see a few recurring formats of christenings with live painting:

A portrait of just the main family. Parents with the child, grandparents from both sides, godparents. I make 5-7 portraits, fully refined, with a larger format for the closest. It’s a compact package, great for smaller celebrations.

Portraits of all the guests. I paint everyone who signs up - family, friends, great-aunts, cousins. A larger number of works, less time for each. It’s a choice for parents who want every guest to leave with a keepsake.

A keepsake portrait plus painting during the celebration. Sometimes parents order one large family portrait as a gift for the grandparents, and during the christening I additionally paint portraits of selected people. It’s a hybrid model, working well for smaller events.

What guests remember from such a day

From the perspective of a christening participant, live painting is an unusual element that stays in the memory. Guests come back to this memory in conversations - “were you at Tomek’s christening? There was a painter there, I got a portrait”. It’s a topic that lives its own life when months have passed.

The parents themselves remember the day most strongly. Years later they say that the christening portrait hangs in the child’s room, that the grandparents approve, that the framed work has become part of the home. It’s a long-term effect that other keepsakes don’t provide.
